Letter to the Clerk of the Committee and
memorandum from the Food and Drink Federation (FDF)
ENQUIRY INTO UK PREPARATIONS FOR THE WORLD SUMMIT
ON SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
FDF has seen and discussed the Committee's request
for written evidence in respect of the above enquiry. Whilst FDF
does not consider it appropriate to respond to the specific issues
highlighted in the Committee's press notice of 24 January, I am
pleased to enclose a copy of the FDF UK Food and Drink Sector
Interim Report for the UN Summit taking place in August. I hope
that it both informs and encourages you about the progress this
sector has made to date.
Sustainable development is one of the key challenges
facing society in the 21st century. As the food and drink industry
lies at the heart of sustainability, in supplying the world's
population with food, we are committed to making an active contribution.
In particular, we are committed to minimising our environmental
impact and working towards the objective of long term sustainability.
We want to increase our understanding of what
sustainable development will mean for us in practice and to raise
awareness of the issues amongst our membership. We have therefore
created a specialist group of industry experts on sustainable
development who are now working to develop guidelines on practical
measures that can be taken by manufacturing companies.
As a first step the Group has produced this
Interim Report. It reviews progress by the industry in tackling
sustainable development issues since Rio 1992, set against the
UK Government's four defining objectives. The final chapter addresses
some future challenges. The Report is intended to provide a basis
for discussion with other stakeholders in the run up to the September
We are circulating our Report widely to seek
the views of a full range of stakeholders and would greatly appreciate
any comments you might have.
