Letter, 20 February 2001, from the Pro-Vice
Chancellor at the University of Hertfordshire to the Chief Executive
of Sport England
de HAVILLAND CAMPUS
Thank you for your letter dated 12 February
2001. As you would expect, I was very disappointed with its content.
Even if we were able to obtain the maximum amount you identified
(£1 million), this sum would not approach even the marginal
cost of extending the pool to 50 metres. Clearly, we believe that
this is an opportunity lost both for the community and for competitive
sport in the North London/Hertfordshire region. We were in a position
to deliver a 50 metre pool with certainty on a marginal cost basis
in 2003. However, I know that you will have balanced this project
against the prospects of other potential projects and obviously
I respect that judgement. We shall now progress with our planned
25 metre pool.
