Letter to Mr John Maxton MP from the Parliamentary
Commissioner for Standards
Thank you for your letters of 2 and 6 March and the
copy of the statement from Mr Winslow.
I enclose an extract from the Code of Conduct and
Rules which sets out the complaints procedure. The powers of the
Committee which they use as necessary to support my work are summarised
at paragraphs 70 and 71. I also enclose a copy of the Standing
Orders of the Commissioner and the Committee.
As I explained when we discussed the process on the
telephone, I make the enquiries I feel are necessary to ensure
that a complaint has been thoroughly investigated. If I find any
evidence which is at variance with the response I have received
from the Member, I put that to the Member for consideration and,
where appropriate, challenge before I take a view on the complaint.
