Lighter Evenings (Experiment) Bill [HL]

Bill

To

Advance time by one hour throughout the year for an experimental period;

and for connected purposes. 

Be it enacted by the Queen’s most Excellent Majesty, by and with the advice and

consent of the Lords Spiritual and Temporal, and Commons, in this present

Parliament assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:—

Time for general purposes

Subject to section 3 of the Summer Time Act 1972 (c. 6) (interpretation of

references) the time for general purposes shall be one hour in advance of

Greenwich mean time.

Amendment of the Summer Time Act 1972

In section 1(1) of the Summer Time Act 1972 (advance of time during period of

summer time) for “one hour” substitute “two hours”.

Amendment of the Interpretation Act 1978

For section 9 of the Interpretation Act 1978 (c. 30) (references to time of day)

substitute—

“Whenever an expression of time occurs in an Act, the time referred to

shall, unless it is otherwise specifically stated, be held to be the time

established by the Lighter Evenings (Experiment) Act 2005, for so long

as that Act is in force.”

Amendment of Scotland Act 1998

In section L5 (time) of Schedule 5 (reserved matters) to the Scotland Act 1998

(c. 46), insert as the first entry under the cross-heading Exceptions­­—

   

“The decision of whether to bring into force in Scotland the Lighter

Evenings (Experiment) Act 2005”.

5       

Short title, commencement and extent

(1)   

This Act may be cited as the Lighter Evenings (Experiment) Act 2005.

(2)   

This Act shall come into force—

(a)   

in England at two o’clock in the morning of 29th October 2006,

(b)   

in Wales on such day (if any) as the National Assembly for Wales may

by order made by statutory instrument appoint,

(c)   

in Scotland on such day (if any) as the Scottish Parliament may appoint,

(d)   

in Northern Ireland on such day (if any) as—

(i)   

the Northern Ireland Assembly, if it is not suspended, may

appoint, or

(ii)   

if that Assembly is suspended, the Secretary of State may by

order appoint,

   

and shall expire at two o’clock in the morning of 25th October 2009.

(3)   

This Act extends to the whole of the United Kingdom.
