Select Committee on European Union Forty-Ninth Report

Letter from the Chairman to Mr David Jamieson MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department for Transport, Local Government and the Regions

Thank you for your Explanatory Memorandum dated 7 May which Sub-Committee B considered at its meeting on 20 May.

We agree with the Government that these are measures devoutly to be wished for, and we are content to see Community legislation in this area. So far as we are concerned, the important thing is that standards should be raised and extended as quickly as practicable.

On the matter of increasing liability levels, we agree that if this can be done in the IMO diplomatic conference in October, this would be the preferred outcome. If this is not possible, we should wish to see the Commission's proposals given a fair wind.

The Scrutiny reserve on this document is lifted.
