Select Committee on European Union Forty-Ninth Report

PETROL AND DIESEL FUELS (3677/02)

Letter from the Chairman to David Jamieson MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department for Transport

Thank you for your Explanatory Memorandum dated 20 January 2003 which Sub-Committee B considered at its meeting on 3 February.

We agree that the compromise package appears to be a favourable outcome for the United Kingdom. We note that there will be no tightening of standards for non-road fuel specifications in this proposal, and that any future tightening will be linked to a Commission study of the costs, benefits, feasibility and need for improved non-road fuel quality.

We lift the Scrutiny reserve on this document.
