Select Committee on European Union Thirteenth Report

19th REPORT, SESSION 1998-99: PROSPECTS FOR THE TAMPERE EUROPEAN COUNCIL

Letter from Barbara Roche MP, Minister of State, Home Office to the Chairman of Sub-Committee F

I enclose the Government's formal written response to your Committee's report Prospects for the Tampere European Council, which was published on 7 September.

I am very sorry that, despite our firm intention of doing so, this response, which was agreed inter-departmentally, was not made available before the European Council itself, nor before the debate on your Unstarred Question on 11 October, in line with your Committee's request. This was due to a most regrettable oversight in this Department for which I can only apologise.

To a large extent our response has of course been overtaken by the Council itself and I understand that the Council Conclusions were deposited on 19 October. However, I am sending a copy of our response for the record and I will of course be very happy to supply any further information which you may require.

3 November 1999
