1.Paper not subject to parliamentary proceedings—The following paper was laid before the House and ordered to lie on the Table:

1997 Marriage, Divorce and Adoption Statistics for England and Wales, laid under the Registration Service Act 1953.

Public Business

2.Acts of Parliament—It was moved by the Baroness Jay of Paddington to resolve that, notwithstanding the Resolution of this House of 8th February 1849, the record copy of each Act of Parliament, authenticated by the Clerk of the Parliaments and deposited in the House of Lords Record Office, shall be printed on archive paper instead of vellum; that the supply of a duplicate copy to the Public Record Office shall be discontinued; and that these changes shall take effect in respect of all Acts which receive Royal Assent after 1st January 2000; after debate, the motion was agreed to, and it was ordered that a Message be sent to the Commons to acquaint them therewith.
3.Greater London Authority Bill—The bill was further considered on report; amendments were agreed to; amendments were moved and (by leave of the House) withdrawn; amendments were disagreed to (see division lists 1 and 3); an amendment was agreed to (see division list 2); further consideration on report was adjourned.
4.Food Standards Bill—The bill was reported from a Grand Committee with amendments; it was ordered that the bill be printed as amended. (HL Bill 94)
5.Seaside resorts—The Lord Luke asked Her Majesty’s Government what progress they have made in promoting the regeneration of seaside resorts; after debate, the question was answered by the Lord McIntosh of Haringey.
6.Greater London Authority Bill—The bill was further considered on report; amendments were agreed to; amendments were moved and (by leave of the House) withdrawn; further consideration on report was adjourned after amendment 317.

(“(3A) The Mayor shall—

(a) so far as reasonably practicable, answer any such question orally at the meeting at which it is put, or

(b) if for any reason it is not reasonably practicable to do that, provide a written answer before the end of the third working day following the day on which the question was asked at the meeting,

(subject, in either case, to subsection (4) below).

(3B) For the purposes of subsection (3A)(b) above, the day on which a question is asked at a meeting is—

(a) in the case of an oral question, the day on which the question is first asked at the meeting; or

(b) in the case of a written question, the day on which the question is first raised at the meeting.”);
