1.Lord Trotman—Sir Alexander James Trotman, Knight, having been created Baron Trotman, of Osmotherley in the County of North Yorkshire, for life by Letters Patent dated 2nd March 1999 (see appendix), was introduced between the Lord Renwick of Clifton and the Lord Butler of Brockwell, the Gentleman Usher of the Black Rod and Garter King of Arms preceding; and made and subscribed the solemn affirmation pursuant to statute.

Judicial Business

2.Harries (A.P.) (Appellant) v. Barclays Bank plc (Respondents)—The petition of the appellant was presented praying that the appeal be withdrawn on the terms agreed between the parties (the agents for the respondents consenting thereto); and it was ordered as prayed.
3.Regina v. Martin (Petitioner)—It was ordered that the costs of the petitioner be taxed in accordance with the Legal Aid Act 1988.
4.Regina v. West Dorset District Council (Respondents) ex parte Searle (Petitioner)—The costs order made pursuant to the 36th Report from the Appeal Committee was vacated; it was ordered that the petitioner do pay to the respondents and the interested party, C.G. Fry & Son Limited, the costs incurred by them in respect of her petition for leave to appeal to this House.

7.Statutory Instruments Reference Committee—The Lord Chancellor acquainted the House that he had received the following Report from the Statutory Instruments Reference Committee:

That it has been notified in accordance with regulation 11(3) of the Statutory Instruments Regulations 1947, that the Secretary of State for Scotland has certified, under regulation 6 of the said Regulations, that the printing and sale of copies of the above-named instrument in accordance with the requirements of section 2(1) of the Statutory Instruments Act 1946 is unnecessary having regard to the fact that the Rules were revoked by the Scottish Local Elections (Amendment) (No. 2) Rules S.I. 1999/492 before they came into force; and that the Committee is satisfied that the certificate is justified and has taken no further action in the matter;

the report was ordered to lie on the Table.

10.Iran: human rights—The Lord Archer of Sandwell asked Her Majesty’s Government what is their policy in relation to human rights in Iran; after debate, the question was answered by the Baroness Symons of Vernham Dean.
