London Underground

The Earl of Caithness asked Her Majesty's Government:

Lord Whitty: The Government's priority is to upgrade the existing Underground: the Public Private Partnership will achieve that.

Major extensions or new lines (such as Crossrail and the Chelsea Hackney Line) will be for the Mayor to consider, as part of his or her integrated transport strategy for London.

Correction to Official Report

Lord Cocks of Hartcliffe asked the Chairman of Committees:

The Chairman of Committees (Lord Boston of Faversham): I have now viewed the video of these proceedings. I can confirm that the corrected version of the Official Report is considerably more accurate than the original.

Joint Consultative Committee with Liberal Democrat Party

The Minster of State, Cabinet Office (Lord Falconer of Thoroton): Liberal Democrat spokesmen invited to attend the Joint Consultative Committee enjoy no greater freedom to disclose details of the proceedings than Government Ministers.

Cabinet Office Better Regulation Unit

Lord Chesham asked Her Majesty's Government:

    Which individuals and organisations are being consulted on modernising government by the Better Regulation Unit of the Cabinet Office.[HL1284]

Lord Falconer of Thoroton: The Government have established a Modernising Government discussion forum on the Internet. The Internet address is http://www.number-10.gov.uk. In addition, the Director of the Better Regulation Unit wrote to about 100 private sector consultees on 3 February 1999 drawing attention to the Modernising Government project and inviting comments at any time as the project unfolds. Further consultation with a wider range of consultees will also take place in due course.

Lord Chesham asked Her Majesty's Government:

    When the Better Regulation Unit of the Cabinet Office sent out invitations to contribute views and advice on modernising government; and what was the date by which responses were requested.[HL1285]

Lord Falconer of Thoroton: The Government have established a Modernising Government discussion forum on the Internet. The Internet address is http:/www.number-10.gov.uk. In addition, the Director of the Better Regulation Unit wrote to a number of consultees on 3 February 1999 drawing attention to the Modernising Government project. He invited comments at any time as the project unfolds over next few years and also asked that any initial comments intended to be taken into account as the White Paper is drafted should arrive by the end of February.

Lord Chesham asked Her Majesty's Government:

    Whether the responses to the invitation to individuals and organisations by the Better Regulation Unit of the Cabinet Office to contribute views and advice on modernising government will be published; and, if so, when.[HL1286]

Lord Falconer of Thoroton: The Modernising Government project is expected to last several years. The private sector has already been consulted and will be consulted again in a number of ways as the project unfolds. It is not intended that individual views and advice will be published.
