The Third Way

Lord Patten asked Her Majesty's Government:

What is their definition of their term "the third way".[HL2026]

The Lord Privy Seal (Lord Richard): As the Prime Minister's article in the Independent on 7 April 1998 sets out, the third way returns to the values of the left--justice, solidarity, freedom--but we are committed to rethink how we deliver them.

The Middle Way

Lord Patten asked Her Majesty's Government:

What is their definition of their term "the middle way"; and whether this differs from "the third way".[HL2027]

Lord Richard: The Government leave to others the definition of "the middle way", which was a doctrine developed by Harold Macmillan in the 1930s.
