COUNCIL TAX IN LONDON AND ESSEX

The Minister of State, Department of the Environment (Viscount Ullswater): Information on transitional relief by council tax band is not available centrally.

The estimated average council tax payable per dwelling in 1993–94 and in 1994–95 in each council tax

band for each London borough, and for each council in Essex, is given in the tables below. These figures are based on information provided by authorities as at December 1993 for 1993–94 figures, and as at June 1994 for 1994–95 figures. No allowance is made in these estimates for the effect of transitional relief or council tax benefit.

The political control of each council at the end of December 1994 is also given in the table below.

The estimated average amount of council tax transitional relief granted per dwelling, across all bands, in 1993–94 and 1994–95 for each London borough, and for each council in Essex, is also given in the tables below. These figures are based on information provided by authorities as at December 1993 and March 1994 for 1993–94 figures, and as at June 1994 and September 1994 for 1994–95 figures.

TIMBER LABELLING

Lord Beaumont of Whitley asked Her Majesty's Government:

    What is their policy towards the Austrian initiative at the October meeting of the EU Environment Ministers on an efficient and practicable multilateral system for the certification of wood.

The Minister of State, Scottish Office (Lord Fraser of Carmyllie): The Austrian Government's paper provides a detailed and comprehensive discussion of the options for timber labelling. It will be a helpful source of information on the subject.
