LORDS COMMITTEE GLOBALISATION INQUIRY: HEARINGS

The House of Lords Select Committee on Economic Affairs continues its hearings in relation to its inquiry into the impact of the globalisation of the world economy. Tomorrow, Tuesday 4 December at 4.15 pm, evidence will be heard from Mr Martin Temple, Director General of the Engineering Employers’ Federation, who will be accompanied by Mr Steven Radley, Chief Economist, and Miss Lee Hopley, Economist. At 5.10 pm, evidence will be heard from Mr Peter Sutherland, Partner and Chairman of Goldman Sachs International.

The hearings will be held in Committee Room 3, Palace of Westminster (access via St Stephen's Entrance, the main public entrance to the Houses of Parliament).

The hearings are open to the public and the press. Announcements of further hearings will be made in due course.

NOTES FOR EDITORS

1. The Committee was appointed by the House of Lords on 7 March 2001 and reappointed on 28 June with the following terms of reference:"to consider economic affairs". On 24 July the Committee published a Call for Evidence in relation to its inquiry into globalisation of the world economy announced on 22 March. The deadline for written submissions is 31 January 2002 (extended from 8 October).

3. The House of Lords appointed, on 7 December 1998, a Select Committee to consider the operation of the Monetary Policy Committee of the Bank of England. Its last report, HL Paper 34 (Session 2000-01), was published in February 2001. Previously, in June 2000, the Liaison Committee of the House of Lords recommended "the appointment of a sessional Economic Committee after the present ad hoc Committee on the Monetary Policy Committee of the Bank of England has concluded its inquiry" (HL Paper 81 (Session 1999-2000)).
