Joint Committee On Human Rights Twenty-Sixth Report

Ev 1

1. Letter from Rt Hon Patricia Hewitt MP, Secretary of State for Trade and Industry to the Chairman

I was very grateful for the Joint committee's further progress report on the Enterprise Bill, contained in its 21st Report, published on 26 July.

It was useful to have the particular clarification, with respect to Part 8 of the Bill, of why the Committee believes the provisions for interim enforcement orders do not strike a fair balance between the rights of traders and the general interests of consumers. I thought I should confirm to you that we are currently considering ways in which the legislative provisions in this respect could be strengthened to meet the Committee's concerns, with a view to bringing forward appropriate amendments at Report stage in the House of Lords.
