Joint Committee on The Draft Communications Bill Appendices to the Minutes of Evidence

APPENDIX 51

Memorandum submitted by Alderman Iris Robinson MP MLA

Disqualification of Christian Broadcast Media Industry Companies

I write to you in relation to the draft Communication Bill which has recently been published. In particular, I am concerned at the failure of the draft Bill to properly recognise the legitimate rights of Christian Broadcasters within the UK.

Surely in this day and age the opportunity for Christians and other religious broadcasters to apply for any UK broadcasting licences should be guaranteed within the new Bill and should be free from oppressive regulations? Unfortunately, even after years of explanation from concerned groups, the position of Christians seeking licences is still grossly unfair and discriminatory.

I would respectfully request that you consider this aspect of the Bill again and as such remove the religious disqualifications from the Bill. I thank you for considering my concerns and look forward to your response on this matter.
