Joint Committee on Statutory Instruments Thirteenth Report

Memorandum by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food

  1. The Joint Committee considered the above instrument at its meeting on 29th February and requested a memorandum on the following point—

Indicate, in the light of the numerous amendments to the Fresh Meat (Hygiene and Inspection) Regulations 1995 (identified in footnote (c) to regulation 2(1)), whether an early consolidation is planned.

  2. The Ministry is conscious of the need to consolidate the Fresh Meat (Hygiene and Inspection) Regulations 1995 (S.I. 1995/539, amended as indicated in footnote (a) on page 2 of the Queen's Printer's copy of S.I. 2000/225 and also by that instrument). The Ministry is aware that where as in this case an instrument has been amended no fewer than 11 times, consolidation is in principle required in the interests of users of the instrument.

  3. From 1st April 2000, sponsorship of S.I. 1995/539 will pass to the new Food Standards Agency. As resources and other priorities allow, it is intended to start work on a consolidation exercise as soon as possible.
