Joint Committee on Statutory Instruments Forty-Fifth Report

APPENDIX I

Letter from Marjorie Mowlam MP, Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, to David Tredinnick MP, Chairman of the Joint Committee on Statutory Instruments

I am writing to you to say that I am sorry to learn that it will not be possible for the Joint Committee to examine the draft Northern Ireland (Sentences) Act 1998 (Specified Organisations) Order 1998 which I hope to lay before both Houses tomorrow, before it is approved by Parliament. Regrettably the timetabling of the draft Order together with the imminence of the recess has meant that it will not be possible for the Joint Committee to scrutinise it in the normal way.

I understand that the Leader of the House of Lords will set down a Business of the House Motion on Wednesday to provide, exceptionally, for the standing orders not to apply in respect of the Order, but I wanted to pass on my own apologies for any inconvenience caused to the Committee.

27th July 1998
