Select Committee on Transport, Local Government and the Regions Appendices to the Minutes of Evidence

Annex 3

NUMBER OF DRIVERS CHARGED BY POLICE WITH DRIVING BETWEEN 70-79 MPH ON MOTORWAYS

Home Office records do not show the number of speeding offences recorded on motorways. However, at recorded speeds up to 79 mph no prosecutions are likely given that ACPO guidelines suggest a minimum enforcement threshold for prosecution of speed limit plus 10 per cent plus 2 mph. This is 79 mph when a 70 mph limit is in force.

When lower or temporary speed limits are operating, correspondingly lower prosecution thresholds are used, but no record exists for the number of prosecutions on motorways.
