ASSOCIATION OF CHIEF POLICE OFFICERS OF ENGLAND, WALES AND NORTHERN IRELAND

NATIONAL ROAD POLICING STRATEGY

"Joining Forces For Safer Roads"

Strategic Aim

  "To secure an environment where the individual can use the roads with confidence, free from death, injury, damage or free"

Key Objectives

  The three key objectives of the strategy are:

    —  Improved road user behaviour

    —  Safer roads

    —  Safer vehicles

Operational Priorities

  The following three operational priorities have been identified as having the most potential for contributing to the improvement of road safety and the reduction of road casualties:

    —  Speed

    —  Drink Driving

    —  Seat belt wearing

Methodology

  Where appropriate, the use of partnership is to be encouraged in achieving the objectives. Specific data-led approaches to be used are:

Operational

  Provide intelligence-led targeted enforcement

  Provide intelligence-led high visibility policing

Educational

  Target vulnerable groups

  Target offenders

  Inform policy makers

Engineering

  Make appropriate use of technology

  Influence vehicle design

  Influence road design
