Letter to Chief Inspector K P Smith from
the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards
I am currently conducting a Parliamentary inquiry
into complaints against Mr Vaz.
Mr Vaz has informed me that one of the witnesses
to this inquiry, Miss Eileen Eggington QPM, has subjected his
mother, Mrs Vaz senior, to a harassing telephone call and implied
she was acting on my behalf. I asked Mr Vaz for details.
Mr Vaz has informed me that he reported the matter
to you and you are following it up.
Any attempt to interfere in Parliamentary inquiry
conducted by me could be a contempt of the House and any such
allegation is therefore treated very seriously by the Standards
and Privileges Committee which has power to require documents
relevant to an inquiry.
My role is to conduct the investigation on behalf
of the Standards and Privileges Committee of the House of Commons
and report accurately to them. I shall report this incident to
the Committee. I would be grateful therefore if you would let
me have the details, of which you are aware, which relate to this
phone call and the results of any enquiries you have made.
May I thank you in advance for your assistance.
