Draft Report (Science Education from 14 to 19), proposed by the Chairman, brought up and read.

Ordered, That the draft Report be read a second time, paragraph by paragraph.

Paragraphs 1 to 140 read and agreed to.

Ordered, That the summary be an annex to the Report.—(The Chairman.)

Ordered, That the note on visits made in the course of the inquiry be an annex to the Report.—(The Chairman)

Ordered, That the note on international comparisons be an annex to the Report.—(The Chairman)

Ordered, That the statistical analysis of the take-up of science post-16 be an annex to the Report.—(The Chairman)

Resolved, That the Report be the Third Report of the Committee to the House.

Ordered, That the Chairman do make the Report to the House.

Ordered, That the provisions of Standing Order No. 134 (Select committees (reports)) be applied to the Report.

Several papers were ordered to be appended to the Minutes of Evidence.

Short-term Contracts in Science and Engineering: Dr John Sawyer, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Imperial College, Mr Mike Ahern, London School for Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and Dr Clare Bambra, Department of Public Health, Liverpool University, were examined.

Dr Clare Goodess, University of East Anglia, Mr Robert Patton, Imperial College and Dr Liz Rugg, Queen Mary, University of London, were examined.

Dr Eva Link, formerly of University College, London, Mr Matt Hill, formerly of Bradford University, and Dr Robert Bradburne, John Innes Centre, Norwich, were examined.

Ms Sally Hunt, General Secretary and Dr Alan Williams, Manchester University and former Chair of AUT Contract Research Staff Committee, Association of University Teachers; and, Mr Tom Wilson, Head of Universities Department, and Mr Andrew Pike, Higher Education National official, the National Association of Teachers of Higher and Further Education, were examined.

Baroness Warwick of Undercliffe, Chief Executive, and Professor Glynis Breakwell, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Bath and a Member of the Universities UK Research Strategy Committee, Universities UK, were examined.

Sir Gareth Roberts was examined.
