The Committee deliberated.

Resolved, That the Committee do take oral evidence from Baroness Helena Kennedy, Chair of the Human Genetics Commission and Ms Ruth Deech, Chair of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority.— (The Chairman.)

Ordered, That those who submit Memoranda to the Committee have leave to publish them, unless the Clerk believes that there is reason to refer an individual case to the Committee.— (The Chairman.)

Resolved, That the Committee do take oral evidence from Yvette Cooper, a Member of the House, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Health, in connection with its inquiry into Cancer Research — A Follow-Up.— (The Chairman.)

Resolved, That the Committee do meet informally on Wednesday 6 February to discuss its aims and objectives.— (The Chairman.)

Dr Brian Iddon declared a non-pecuniary interest in relation to the inquiry into the Research Assessment Exercise as an honorary member of the Association of University Teachers and Parliamentary liaison to the Royal Society of Chemistry.

Dr Ian Gibson declared a non-pecuniary interest in relation to the inquiry into the Research Assessment Exercise, having managed a university department during the 1996 Research Assessment Exercise.

The Research Assessment Exercise: Mr Bahram Bekhradnia, Director of Policy, Mr John Rogers, Head of Research Assessment Exercise, and Mr John Rushforth, Head of Research Policy, Higher Education Funding Council for England, were examined.

Mr Paul Cottrell, Acting General Secretary, Ms Natalie Fenton, President, and Senior Lecturer, Loughborough University, and Professor Rus Bowman, Professor of Organic Chemistry, Loughborough University and AUT Negotiator, Association of University Teachers, were examined.
