Select Committee on Procedure Appendices to the Minutes of Evidence

APPENDIX 19

Letter from Mr Patrick McLoughlin MP to the Chairman of the Committee

I wish to draw to your attention the details of two parliamentary Questions to which I had Answers last week.

In Hansard, the only information that was given was, of course, simply my Questions and Elliot Morley's replies, one of which came on 7 March, and the other on 8 March. This makes it look as though the information I sought had been given to me in February and it implies that somehow I had been wrong in tabling a Question in this manner.

However, on further investigation it transpires that these Questions were actually on the Order Paper as long ago as 15 October in one case and 14 November in the other, even though it took until March to answer both of them. Consequently, when the Questions were put down the correspondence to which I had referred was still substantially outstanding. In view of the fact that I had got an answer on 10 December about the Holland case and on 6 February about milk containers, it is difficult to understand why my Questions were not answered on 11 December and 7 February. The way it appears in Hansard is that the answers to my letters had been sent some weeks previously (as, indeed, they had) and, that I was remiss in putting down Questions long after the event.

This is obviously not a fair reflection on the true facts of the case. I enclose copies of the Written Answers for your information which confirms what I have said above.

I hope very much that the procedure in replying to Questions may be looked into so that Hon Members are not made to look rather foolish when Answers are given so long after they have been tabled.
