Select Committee on Welsh Affairs Appendices to the Minutes of Evidence

Letter submitted by Anthony Freud, General Director, Welsh National Opera

I am happy to attach two pages of written evidence for your forthcoming inquiry into the role of the UK Government in promoting Wales abroad.

I strongly believe that Welsh National Opera, as a major cultural asset of international reputation, based and manufacturing in Wales, has its own role to play in promoting Wales abroad. Our evidence backs this up. We need partnerships to provide the funding to achieve this and, to that end, we will continue to make our case to the National Assembly for Wales and the other bodies, such as the Arts Council of Wales, the Wales Tourist Board and the Welsh Development Agency. I understand that these bodies are not the focus of your inquiry. As WNO is a UK wide company and receives a high proportion of its core funding from the Arts Council of England, the DCMS is also a "pump priming" source for what we accomplish.
