Select Committee on Treasury First Report

FIRST REPORT

The Treasury Committee has agreed to the following Report:

WORK OF THE TREASURY COMMITTEE AND TREASURY SUB-COMMITTEE

Introduction

1. The Liaison Committee has asked all departmental select committees to report annually on their activities, and in particular on progress on past recommendations.[2] As this is the first such Report from this Committee, we have decided to report, in general terms, on the work of the Committee for the whole of the current Parliament, as well as giving more detail on the current session's activities. The Liaison Committee's intentions were to monitor how well the Executive was responding to Parliament's committees. We also intend to continue to monitor our own performance.

2. In 1998, we established a Sub-committee to examine in turn the various departments and agencies for which the Chancellor of the Exchequer is responsible. Since then, the Sub-committee has succeeded in examining nearly all of the bodies concerned, and its Report appears below (paragraphs 31 to 64).
