Select Committee on Standards and Privileges Second Report

Annex 6

Letter to the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards from the Rt Hon Dr John Reid MP

Thank you for your letter of 27 January. I acknowledge receipt of the copy letter attached thereto.

I note that the letter relates to the Observer complaint again John Maxton and me. I note also that because of the method of communication adopted, it is not signed. I am not clear who the complainer is; can you advise?

May I take it that you are satisfied that sufficient evidence exists in support of the complaint? I am not clear whether this sufficient evidence is limited to the e-mail or is there further material?

I understand that you are obliged to ask me to respond to the complaint before any preliminary investigation may be commenced. Is my understanding correct?

Due to the gravity of the complaint and its wide-ranging nature it is important to me that my response to you is fully considered.

Accordingly I will write with a considered response in due course.
