File note by the Parliamentary Commissioner
Dr J Reid Mr J Maxton
Thursday 20 April 2000
Telephone conversation with Mr Rowley
I informed Mr Rowley that I had had confirmation
from the Labour Party about two of the budget forecasts which
he provided but the one with the Scottish Labour Party on top
they said they had no knowledge of and did not know where it came
from. I asked him if he could provide me with any other verification
for that document and he said he would look into it.
I thanked him for his returned note of the conversation
and said that I quite understood that he didn`t wish to say anything
further at this juncture about what Dr Reid had said to him that
he should say to me and what he should leave out.
Mr Rowley said that he did not wish to give any further
information on that front at the moment but that if at any point
Dr Reid implied that he was not telling the truth, he had a recorded
conversation on tape with Dr Reid in which Dr Reid was instructing
him on what to tell me and what not to tell me and he would then
make that available to me.
