Select Committee on Standards and Privileges Second Report

Annex 78

Letter to the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards from Mr John Maxton MP

I have looked again at the transcripts and evidence you sent to me and have some questions to which I would want written answers.

    1.    While you have sent me the transcript of the interviews you did with Chris Winslow and Suzanne Hilliard you did not send me their original statements. Without them parts of the interviews do not make sense.

    2.    On page 15 of the interview with Ms Hilliard you say: —

`One of my witnesses says that you said to him that you had, and I quote, "been taken on by the Party with Maxton`s money". Is this true?`

I cannot find this quote in any evidence you have sent me. Who said it?

    3.    Is the Committee aware of how often you threaten to use their powers to call witnesses and to try and get different answers from witnesses?

    4.    Throughout the interviews with all witnesses you say, "a witness" or "witnesses" have told me x, y or z. Please check each reference and tell me to which witness you refer in each case as many of the facts alluded to by these witnesses to not appear in the evidence you have sent me.

    5.    Page 6 of Mr Winslow`s evidence I quote: —

`Miss Filkin "I have to tell you that is at variance with other people who were involved in that conference call. That is not what they recall."`

Since John Rafferty is the only person who has given you any evidence (contradictory evidence) on that conference call and since you seem confused as to when it took place, can you tell me who the other people are who took part in it and to whom you have spoken.

I give you my solemn promise that I will not contact any of them or attempt to intimidate them!! However without knowing who they are then I can only assume that they did not exist and act accordingly.

I look forward to hearing from you.
