Select Committee on Environment, Transport and Regional Affairs Memoranda

Supplementary Memorandum by English Heritage (CEM 80 (a))

Thank you for your letter of 12 February, enquiring about several issues raised during English Heritage's evidence at the Inquiry.

An example of an historic cemetery whose original design is being spoiled by "cramming" is Kensal Green in London. At this cemetery the original, strong design lines are being severely eroded by the recent opening of new graves which encroach both on the main axial path and the path which encircles the cemetery. There is also damage caused by the removal of gravestones (where these are less historically significant) and the subsequent significant raising of the original, carefully graded ground levels into which new graves are inserted over the old ones.

A copy of the list of cemeteries on the Register follows.

With regard to amounts to be spent on the Public Parks and Cemeteries Review projects (ie assessing further sites for addition to the Register), I can confirm that £80,000 is allocated over the current financial year and next financial year for use on the Public Parks Review project. A further £80,000 is allocated for the Cemeteries Review Project, over the two financial years starting in April 2001, but we have to juggle priorities. In order to carry out these important projects, English Heritage will be unable to complete other previously scheduled activities, as we have received no extra funding for the Parks and Cemeteries Projects.
