Select Committee on Environment, Transport and Regional Affairs Memoranda

Memorandum by the Yorkshire Tourist Board (CEM 111)

So far the Yorkshire Tourist Board has not carried out any specific promotions linked to cemeteries. However, we believe that churches, including cemeteries, have underdeveloped potential as a focus for visitors. Whilst local churches and cemeteries will not be major generators of visitor numbers they have the potential to enhance the quality of stay for visitors and to extend the length of stay. As a result we are developing a pilot initiative with the Yorkshire and Humber Regional Church Commission. We are attempting to secure a full funding package and if successful would pilot the Initiative within North Yorkshire: "The North Yorkshire Church Tourism Initiative".

The pilot initiative is in our view highly innovative involving church groups, communities and schools which would work together to research their local church and to develop interpretation projects which would be supported by a small grant scheme. A number of churches would combine to provide joint promotional material, usually based on a leaflet/brochure and develop church trails. The scheme would be supported by a dedicated web site, interpretation training sessions, customer care training, and best practice seminars.
