LONDON EMPLOYERS' COALITION IN 2000

OUR PURPOSE

  "To enhance the performance of New Deal in London".

OUR PRIMARY OBJECTIVE IN 2000 IS TO

    —  Engage employers to meet their needs and thereby meet the needs of New Deal job-seekers also.

THREE CONTRIBUTORY OBJECTIVES ARE TO:

    —  Improve the progression of ethnic minorities into employment;

    —  Improve the operation of the Gateway to meet the needs of employers and New Deal participants;

    —  Increase the progression of New Deal participants from the Options into employment.

OUR WORK PROGRAMME

  We will build on our partnerships with the Employment Service regionally and locally to pursue three inter-linked programmes of work. We will continue to focus our work on the New Deal for Young People but will include also the New Deal for the over 25s and Lone Parents.

Analysing Performance Targets and Understanding Barriers to Improvement

  Review performance data regularly.

  Explore performance issues arising—root causes and barriers to progress.

  We will focus on issues related to achieving parity of outcomes for ethnic minorities, participation and progression in the Gateway and progression from Options to employment.

Building Sector Specific Solutions

  Build on emerging financial services sector model (development of sector employer groups; identification of sector specific intermediaries and the development of pre-and post employment support in the Gateway and Options)

  We will establish sector-specific Task Groups to take forward this work. In addition to the financial services sector we wish to work with the IT, entertainment, hospitality, retail and public sector sectors.

Promoting Innovation and Success

  Identify and disseminate good practice

    —  Initiate the London Employers' Coalition Awards Scheme for New Deal clients and employers.

    —  Publicise and celebrate successes locally.

  Promote the Innovation Fund and encourage and facilitate bids

OUR OPERATIONS

  We will:

    —  Work in partnership with the Employment Service regionally and locally as well as with local partnerships.

    —  Engage other employers through our networks.

    —  Forge links with intermediaries.

    —  Draw on our experience, commercial expertise and independence; and

    —  Make representations to decision-makers.

  We will continue to meet bi-monthly to consider our progress and meet in small Task Groups to pursue individual initiatives.

  We wish to increase the membership of the Coalition to include further New Deal employers as well as additional representatives from our target sectors.

GEOGRAPHICAL FOCUS OF OUR ACTIVITY

  We are committed to improving the performance of New Deal across London but will continue to focus our support in: Hackney; Haringey; Hounslow; Newham; Southwark; Tower Hamlets; and Wembley.
