Select Committee on Education and Employment Appendices to the Minutes of Evidence

APPENDIX 8

Memorandum from Sheffield Hallam University (HE 76)

THE VICE-CHANCELLOR'S OFFICE

1.  EXAMPLES OF THE SORT OF WORK SHU DOES WITH YOUNGER SCHOOL PUPILS:

Take Our Daughters to Work—4 April 2000, 80 girls aged 13 to 14, from Hinde House School, Sheffield and The Foulstone School, Barnsley took part in this year's event, shadowing female staff from all sectors of university life, from lecturing staff to representatives of the students' union.

Millennium Summer School 2000—45 pupils aged 16-17 from Sheffield and Rotherham.

Pathways to Employment 1999—The University's Department of Access and Guidance with the School of Environment and Development in partnership with staff and pupils from Hinde House and Firth Park Schools and Sheffield College participated in a ten week project targeted at Year 10 and 11 school students. Funded by the Education Action Zone in the North of Sheffield, the project was designed to give young people an insight into studying in the higher education sector and working in the professions associated with the construction industry.

Over the ten week project the pupils were split into groups and given the task of designing and estimating the cost of a refurbishment of a traditionally built dwelling. Students experienced a range of different professional roles and ended with a high profile presentation during "Construction Week".

School of Education—programme of pupil mentoring and visits to both primary and secondary schools in the University's areas where participation in post-16 education is traditionally very low. Main objective is to encourage pupils to think positively about the benefits of HE and in particular teaching as a career.

  SCOPE—(Centre for Science Education)

The Centre receives visits from primary schools around the region and organises or participates in activities such as Science Week, Young Engineers, Young Investigators and BAE System Engineering Our Future. During the 1999-2000 academic year 10.1 per cent of South Yorkshire's primary and secondary pupils were involved in one of the Centre's activities (over 20,000 headcount). Over 1,564 teachers and 768 professional engineers were also involved.

2.  BREAKDOWN OF APPLICANTS BETWEEN STATE AND INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS IN DIFFERENT SUBJECTS

  See Table two.

3.  RELATIVE SUCCESS RATES OF STUDENTS FROM THE STATE AND INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS IN DIFFERENT SUBJECTS

  See Table three.

4.  PERCENTAGE OF APPLICANTS FROM STATE AND INDEPENDENT SECTORS TO WHOM OFFERS WERE MADE AND PERCENTAGE ADMITTED

  See Table one.
