Mr. Dewar:
Estimates of savings from employing external consultants are neither set nor collected centrally. The responsibility for ensuring that such appointments are cost effective rests with individual Trusts and Boards.

Mr. Moore: To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will place in the Library figures (a) by health board and (b) overall, on the number of operations cancelled on the day of, or the day after, admission to a hospital, and the numbers of those patients not readmitted within a month, by quarter, for the last three years. Mr. Dewar:
Information on cancellations of hospital admissions at the level of detail requested, is not held centrally. Details of cancellations of planned admissions for in-patient and day case treatment are given in the table. Information on cancellations of hospital planned admissions is published annually in the NHS in Scotland Annual Report, copies of which have been placed in the Library.

Mr. Dewar:
The information requested is unavailable both in total and by Health Board. However, 81 per cent. of the essential building is considered to be in physical condition A or B which is evidence of the general soundness of the NHS estate.
