SUPPLEMENT TO THE VOTES AND PROCEEDINGS

PETITION FROM PARISH COUNCILS IN THE CONSTITUENCY OF SOMERTON AND FROME

7th March 2007

To the Honourable the Commons of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in Parliament assembled.

The Humble Petition of parish councils in the constituency of Somerton and Frome,

Sheweth

That we deplore the social, economic and environmental effects of the potential closure of a substantial number of post offices in the constituency of Somerton and Frome.

Wherefore your Petitioners pray that your Honourable House urges the Government to reconsider the matter before irreparable is done to local communities.

And your Petitioners, as in duty bound, will ever pray, &c.

SUPPLEMENT TO THE VOTES AND PROCEEDINGS

Observations by the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry on the Petition [6th February] from the people of Ceredigion and Save our Seas campaigners against the selling of licences for oil and gas drilling in Cardigan Bay Special Area of Conservation.

The Government recognises that the oil and gas sector is one of the UK's most important industries and our role in awarding offshore oil and gas licences is to promote the continued development of the North Sea whilst respecting and minimising the impact on our environment.

Four blocks, in Cardigan Bay and the Moray Firth, which are close to, or on, certain Special Areas of Conservation that were applied for in the 24th Oil and Gas Licensing Round have been the subject of representations regarding dolphins located in or near them. In order to consider these concerns in more detail the Department of Trade & Industry announced on 1st February that it is deferring a decision on whether or not to award licences for these 4 blocks. A separate Appropriate Assessment will be undertaken in relation to these blocks and will be consulted on before any decision is made.
